How does your garden grow...
Every cool kids should garden after work. When it was still sunny when we got home on Tuesday, Paul and I set out to plant our first ever Jones-Tree garden for Layla. That's what she thinks.
We decided we definitely wanted cherry or grape tomatoes, squash, cantaloupe, strawberries and herbies. Wally World helped us decide we also wanted watermelon and jalapenos. Pinterest made me plant carrots in a pot. "Carrots thrive in a pot" it says. We'll be the judges of that, thank you very much.
The pictures on the left are the before shots. We be planners yo. The picture on the right is the finished garden (less the strawberries in a bag that will hang on the shepherds hook once their roots are established). Furthest from the patio is a row with grape tomatoes and a jalapeno plant, next is a row of squash, then a row of cantaloupe, and lastly is the row of watermelon plants. In the green pot are our carrot seeds. In the window box are basil, mint and cilantro for p'jones. Not pictured are our experimental sunflowers that I planted just in case the zombies apocalypse begins. I learned from Plants v. Zombies that we would need these to make money in the apocalypse. They had the most worms near them, so I'm thinking they'll have some great soil to spread their roots in. Fingers crossed.
Lessons learned this adventure:
1. It's cheaper to buy some things as plants vs seeds. Granted if I wanted ten tomato plants, it would have been cheaper to plant seeds, but we aren't using the entire backyard for this folks.
2. P'jones had never planted a garden before. Men who have never planted gardens before are fun to watch.
3. Massive worms live by our fence. Dead worms are by the tree. That's where Layla rolled while we worked on the garden because she is not allowed in the garden box. I know-how dare we not allow the princess in there?! She's helped me garden for two other years and was getting frustrated that she couldn't smell the leaves like she usually gets to. Thank you dead worm for the distraction.
